What You Should Know About Water Fluoridation
Without Our Consent: Fluoride is the only chemical added to drinking water for the purpose of medication (to prevent tooth decay). Is it right or ethical or even legal to medicate an entire population without individuals giving their consent? See Fluoride Action Network: Medical Ethics.
A Hazardous Waste Chemical: The chemical to be added for fluoridation is not a naturally occurring fluoride nor the fluoride that dentists use or that is found in toothpaste. In most cases it is fluorosilicic acid, a toxic hazardous waste by-product of the phosphate fertilizer industry. See Fluoride Action Network: Fluoridation Chemicals.
Unsafe for Babies: In November of 2006 the American Dental Association (ADA) advised that parents should avoid giving babies fluoridated water. Babies exposed to fluoride are at high risk of developing dental fluorosis, a permanent tooth defect caused by fluoride damaging the cells which form the teeth. Consider the Risk: Ingestion of fluoride has little benefit, but many risks. According to the National Research Council (NRC) and other scientific studies, fluoride can damage the brain, thyroid, kidneys, and bones. See Fluoride Action Network: Health Effects.
Taxpayer Expense: The cost to equip the Wichita water department for fluoridation is estimated to be $2,300,000. The cost to fluoridate the water supply each year is estimated to be $570,000. It would be more effective and less expensive for a charity to provide free toothpaste, toothbrushes, and professional dental care to those who cannot afford it, and to educate the community about the importance of proper diet (good nutrition, fewer sweets, etc.) and good dental hygiene.
